Green Istanbul – Parks, Groves and Nature Escapes Tourists Rarely See

When people think of Istanbul, they usually imagine the Bosphorus, mosques, palaces, ferries, historic streets and crowded neighborhoods.

But there is another side of the city.

Green Istanbul.

In a metropolis filled with millions of people, it is surprisingly easy to travel a short distance and suddenly find yourself surrounded by forests, ponds, botanical gardens, historic groves and panoramic Bosphorus viewpoints.

Many of these places rarely appear in the standard three-day Istanbul itinerary.

Most first-time visitors fill their schedules with Hagia Sophia, Topkapi Palace, the Grand Bazaar, Galata, Taksim, Dolmabahçe and a Bosphorus cruise.

And they should.

But after several days of walking through busy streets—especially during Istanbul's hot and humid summer months—sometimes what you need isn't another museum.

Sometimes you simply need trees, fresh air and silence.

This guide is about exactly that.

1. Ataturk Arboretum – Forget You Are in Istanbul for a While

📍 Location: Bahçeköy, Sarıyer

Open Ataturk Arboretum in Google Maps

For first-time visitors, it can be surprising that a place like this exists inside Istanbul.

Ataturk Arboretum lies near the Belgrad Forest and contains an extensive collection of trees and plants from Türkiye and around the world.

The real attraction, however, isn't simply the number of species.

It is the feeling of leaving the city behind.

Walk beside the ponds, follow the trails and after a while the traffic, buildings and crowds of Istanbul seem very far away.

Why we recommend it

This is one of the best choices if you enjoy nature photography, long walks, autumn colors or simply want a break after several days of sightseeing.

Autumn is especially beautiful when the trees begin changing color, although spring has its own atmosphere as well.

Suggested time: 2–3 hours.

Enis ERBAY's Local Tip

Don't arrive only to photograph the famous pond and leave.

Walk deeper into the arboretum.

The experience becomes much better once you move away from the most photographed areas.

Also check current entrance rules and opening times before visiting because access conditions can be more controlled than in a normal public park.

2. Nezahat Gökyiğit Botanical Garden – A Botanical World Surrounded by the City

📍 Location: Ataşehir

Open Nezahat Gökyiğit Botanical Garden in Google Maps

The location itself makes this place fascinating.

Nezahat Gökyiğit Botanical Garden sits in one of Istanbul's busiest modern districts, surrounded by major roads and dense urban development.

Then you step inside and the atmosphere changes.

The garden isn't simply somewhere to sit under a tree. It is also dedicated to botanical research, conservation and education.

Visitors can explore themed gardens, walking paths and a wide variety of plant species.

This works particularly well for families, plant lovers and travelers who want something completely different from Istanbul's historical attractions.

Suggested time: 1.5–2.5 hours.

Enis ERBAY's Local Tip

Take your time here.

Instead of treating it like a normal park, look at the individual plants and themed sections.

If you enjoy photography, focus on details rather than only wide landscape shots.

3. Fethi Pasha Grove – See the Bosphorus from Above

📍 Location: Kuzguncuk / Üsküdar

Open Fethi Pasha Grove in Google Maps

Many visitors explore Kuzguncuk's colorful houses and cafés and then immediately move on to another district.

We recommend doing something different.

Go uphill.

Fethi Pasha Grove rises above the Asian shoreline and provides a green escape with impressive views across the Bosphorus.

This creates one of our favorite combinations on the Asian Side:

Kuzguncuk at street level, followed by the Bosphorus from above.

You experience two completely different versions of the same neighborhood within a short distance.

Suggested time: 1–2 hours.

Combine with: Kuzguncuk and Üsküdar waterfront.

Enis ERBAY's Local Tip

If you are already visiting Kuzguncuk, don't rush away.

Add Fethi Pasha Grove to the same itinerary.

On a clear day, the Bosphorus view is worth the extra time.

4. Mihrabat Grove – Watch Two Continents from One Viewpoint

📍 Location: Kanlıca, Beykoz

Open Mihrabat Grove in Google Maps

Seeing the Bosphorus from a ferry is beautiful.

Seeing it from the shoreline is different.

Seeing it from above gives you a completely new understanding of Istanbul.

Mihrabat Grove sits above Kanlıca and offers panoramic views across the Bosphorus.

From here, Istanbul's geography becomes easier to understand.

Europe and Asia suddenly look surprisingly close to each other.

Boats move below.

Bridges stretch between the continents.

Neighborhoods rise along both shores.

Best time to visit

For photography, we prefer the late afternoon rather than strong midday light.

As the sun gets lower, the Bosphorus often looks softer and more atmospheric.

Suggested time: 1–1.5 hours.

Combine with: Kanlıca.

Enis ERBAY's Local Tip

Start at sea level in Kanlıca.

Try the famous yogurt, drink tea beside the Bosphorus and then continue uphill to Mihrabat.

You will see the same water from two completely different perspectives.

5. Hidiv Grove – Where Nature and Istanbul History Meet

📍 Location: Çubuklu, Beykoz

Open Hidiv Grove in Google Maps

By the time you reach Hidiv Grove, central Istanbul already feels far away.

Large trees, walking paths, Bosphorus views and the historic Hidiv Pavilion create an atmosphere very different from Sultanahmet or Taksim.

It is particularly interesting because the story here is not simply another Ottoman palace story.

The area is connected to Egypt's Khedive Ismail Pasha and reflects the wider political and cultural world surrounding Istanbul during the late Ottoman period.

Who will enjoy it?

Hidiv works especially well for travelers who enjoy a combination of nature, architecture, history and photography.

It also fits naturally into a longer Beykoz or northern Bosphorus itinerary.

Suggested time: 1–2 hours.

Enis ERBAY's Local Tip

Don't drive all the way to Hidiv and immediately return to the city center.

Turn it into a proper Beykoz day.

Kanlıca, Mihrabat, Hidiv and, if you have enough time, Anadolu Kavağı can all become different chapters of the same journey.

6. Baltalimanı Japanese Garden – A Small Japanese Escape Beside the Bosphorus

📍 Location: Baltalimanı, Sarıyer

Open Baltalimanı Japanese Garden in Google Maps

This place is different from the others.

It isn't a huge forest.

You don't need several hours.

Instead, think of it as a beautiful short stop during a larger Bosphorus itinerary.

The garden features Japanese-inspired landscaping with bridges, water elements, lanterns and plants associated with Japanese garden design.

It becomes particularly attractive during cherry blossom season, generally around the beginning of spring depending on that year's weather conditions.

Suggested time: 30–60 minutes.

Combine with: Emirgan, Baltalimanı and Rumeli Hisarı.

Enis ERBAY's Local Tip

If your visit coincides with cherry blossom season, move this higher on your list.

But remember that it is a relatively small garden.

Think of it as a beautiful stop rather than an entire day trip.

Which Green Istanbul Experience Should You Choose?

If photography is your priority, Ataturk Arboretum and the Japanese Garden are excellent choices.

For Bosphorus views, choose Mihrabat or Fethi Pasha Grove.

For history combined with nature, Hidiv is probably the strongest option.

Families and visitors interested in plants may prefer Nezahat Gökyiğit Botanical Garden.

And if you are already visiting Kuzguncuk or Kanlıca, simply add the closest grove rather than travelling across the entire city for another park.

The point is not to visit every place on this list.

It is to choose the one that fits naturally into your Istanbul itinerary.

Explore Green Istanbul with a Chauffeur-Driven Vehicle

There is one practical problem with many of the places in this guide:

they are spread across Istanbul.

Ataturk Arboretum is in Sarıyer.

Mihrabat and Hidiv are on the Asian Bosphorus.

Nezahat Gökyiğit is in Ataşehir.

Fethi Pasha is in Üsküdar.

Trying to connect several of these places using separate taxis or multiple public-transport connections can consume a significant part of your day.

For this type of itinerary, a chauffeur-driven vehicle with Transfer3e can be particularly convenient.

You can arrange a vehicle for the day and create a route around the places you actually want to visit.

Instead of repeatedly searching for taxis, explaining destinations to different drivers and carrying your belongings from one attraction to another, you travel with the same vehicle and driver throughout the day.

Keep Your Bags in the Vehicle Between Stops

Nature trips often mean carrying more than you would during a normal city walk.

You may have:

camera equipment, jackets, shopping bags, children's belongings or other personal items.

With a dedicated chauffeur vehicle, you can keep suitable belongings in the vehicle between stops rather than carrying everything through every park and grove.

Your driver remains responsible for the vehicle while you explore.

We still recommend keeping passports, cash and other irreplaceable valuables personally with you.

Travel with an English-Speaking Driver

One of the biggest advantages is communication.

An English-speaking driver can help you manage the practical side of your day: confirming the next destination, adjusting the route and helping you move between locations without repeatedly explaining everything to a new taxi driver.

The driver is not a licensed tourist guide unless a separate licensed guide has specifically been arranged, but an experienced local driver can still be a valuable source of practical information about routes, neighborhoods and day-to-day travel in Istanbul.

In that sense, you are not travelling with a different stranger at every stop.

You have the same local professional with you throughout the day.

Stop for Coffee, Shopping or a Photograph Along the Way

This is where a private chauffeur service becomes very different from taking individual taxis.

Your day does not have to follow a rigid Point A → Point B → Point C structure.

Imagine you are travelling from Kanlıca toward Hidiv Grove and decide you want coffee or water.

You can stop along the route.

You pass a shopping mall and decide you want an hour for shopping.

You can stop.

You suddenly see a beautiful Bosphorus viewpoint and want a photograph.

If stopping is safe and legally permitted, your driver can help find an appropriate place.

These reasonable en-route stops can be incorporated into the reserved chauffeur period without turning every small change into a completely new taxi journey.

That flexibility is especially valuable when exploring Istanbul.

Sometimes the best travel moments are the ones you didn't schedule.

Why Chauffeur Service Works Well for Hidden Istanbul

Traditional attractions such as Hagia Sophia, the Blue Mosque and Topkapi Palace are close enough to explore largely on foot.

Hidden Istanbul is different.

The places are scattered.

One grove may be several kilometers from the next palace.

A botanical garden may be on the opposite side of the city.

A viewpoint may require a road journey that is awkward by metro.

This is exactly where chauffeur service becomes useful.

Instead of spending your day thinking:

“How do we get to the next place?”

you can concentrate on:

“What do we want to see next?”

That is a much better way to spend a holiday.

For couples, families, small groups, photographers or travelers carrying luggage, a private vehicle can transform a complicated itinerary into a relaxed day.

Transfer3e can also help arrange the order of the stops so the itinerary makes geographic sense rather than forcing you to cross Istanbul repeatedly.

Suggested Chauffeur Routes

For the European Side, a comfortable nature-focused day could be:

Ataturk Arboretum → Emirgan/Bosphorus → Baltalimanı Japanese Garden → Rumeli Hisarı

For the Asian Side:

Kuzguncuk → Fethi Pasha Grove → Kanlıca → Mihrabat Grove → Hidiv Grove

For a longer Asian Side nature and local-experience day:

Kuzguncuk → Kanlıca → Mihrabat → Hidiv → Beykoz → Anadolu Kavağı

A 9–10 hour chauffeur reservation is particularly useful for this type of itinerary because it gives you enough flexibility to spend more time somewhere you enjoy and less time somewhere that doesn't interest you as much.

You are travelling for the experience—not racing against a tour bus schedule.

Sometimes Seeing Istanbul Means Doing Nothing

Travel creates a strange pressure.

“One more attraction.”

“One more museum.”

“One more photograph.”

“One more neighborhood.”

But some of the moments when you begin to really enjoy Istanbul happen when you are doing almost nothing.

Sitting beneath a tree.

Watching the Bosphorus.

Walking beside a pond.

Putting your phone away.

And spending half an hour without thinking about the next stop.

That is what Green Istanbul is really about.

Istanbul's nature may not be as internationally famous as its palaces and mosques.

But it remains an important part of the city's character.

Enis ERBAY's View

We constantly describe Istanbul as crowded, busy and full of traffic.

And that is true.

But Istanbul isn't only crowded.

Sometimes you travel for twenty or thirty minutes and suddenly find yourself surrounded by trees.

One day you can walk through Topkapi Palace.

The next day you can stand beside a quiet pond at Ataturk Arboretum.

You can eat yogurt beside the Bosphorus in Kanlıca and shortly afterwards look down on the same water from Mihrabat.

You can photograph Kuzguncuk's colorful houses and then disappear into the trees of Fethi Pasha Grove.

I think visitors should experience that contrast.

And when the places you want to see are scattered across Istanbul, this is exactly the kind of day when I prefer having a chauffeur-driven vehicle.

You don't need to think about finding another taxi after every stop.

Your bags can stay with the vehicle.

If you want coffee, you can stop.

If you see somewhere beautiful along the road, you can take a photograph.

If you decide you want to shop for a while, the itinerary can adapt.

The purpose is not simply to move from one attraction to another.

The purpose is to enjoy Istanbul without spending the entire day thinking about transportation.

Discover Istanbul not only through its stone and history.

Sometimes discover it through its trees, views and silence.

Frequently Asked Questions

What are some underrated nature places in Istanbul?

Ataturk Arboretum, Nezahat Gökyiğit Botanical Garden, Fethi Pasha Grove, Mihrabat Grove, Hidiv Grove and Baltalimanı Japanese Garden are good options beyond Istanbul's most famous tourist attractions.

Where can I escape Istanbul's crowds?

Ataturk Arboretum and some of the larger groves are particularly useful when you want a quieter environment. The experience naturally varies by day, season and weekend crowds.

What are the best green places for Bosphorus views?

Mihrabat Grove and Fethi Pasha Grove are excellent choices if your priority is combining greenery with elevated Bosphorus views.

Is it easier to visit these places with a private driver?

If you plan to visit several locations in one day, yes. Many are located in different districts and are not connected by one simple public-transport route. A chauffeur-driven vehicle can reduce transfers and give you greater flexibility during the day.

Can we customize the route with Transfer3e?

Yes. A chauffeur itinerary can be organized around the locations you want to see, with the route arranged as practically as possible according to geography, traffic and the duration of your reservation.

Can we stop for coffee or shopping during a chauffeur booking?

Reasonable stops along the route can be incorporated into the reserved service period, subject to traffic, parking and legal stopping conditions. This makes a chauffeur booking much more flexible than arranging a new taxi for every journey.

Can we leave our luggage in the vehicle?

Suitable luggage and non-essential belongings can remain in the vehicle between stops. We recommend keeping passports, cash and irreplaceable valuables with you.

Is the driver also a tour guide?

The chauffeur provides transportation and practical local assistance. A licensed tourist-guide service is separate and should be specifically arranged if required.

How long should I reserve a vehicle for a Green Istanbul day?

For multiple stops across the city, 9–10 hours provides a comfortable amount of time for a full-day itinerary without rushing between locations.

Evet.

Transfer3e

Explore Green Istanbul with a Private Chauffeur

Many of the places in this guide are beautiful precisely because they are located outside Istanbul's usual tourist routes.

That also means they are not always conveniently connected to one another.

Ataturk Arboretum is in Sarıyer, Fethi Pasha Grove is in Üsküdar, Mihrabat and Hidiv are farther north on the Asian side, while Nezahat Gökyiğit Botanical Garden is in Ataşehir.

If you want to visit several of these places in the same day, constantly changing taxis or planning multiple public-transport connections can take away a significant amount of your sightseeing time.

A simple alternative is to book a private chauffeur-driven vehicle with Transfer3e.

Turn the Green Istanbul Guide into Your Own Private Day Tour

Transfer3e's Istanbul Chauffeur Service – Private Luxury Car Hire can be used to create your own flexible Istanbul itinerary.

The current service is offered as an 8-hour private chauffeur booking, giving you a vehicle and driver for the day rather than booking transportation separately for every destination. Transfer3e

For a Green Istanbul itinerary, for example, you could arrange a route such as:

Kanlıca → Mihrabat Grove → Hidiv Grove → Beykoz

or on the European Side:

Ataturk Arboretum → Emirgan → Baltalimanı Japanese Garden → Rumeli Hisarı

You decide which places interest you most, and the route can be organized around them.

More Than Transportation Between Two Points

The main advantage of a chauffeur service is flexibility.

This is not simply an airport transfer where the vehicle takes you directly from Point A to Point B.

The vehicle remains available during the reserved service period.

That means your day can adapt as you explore Istanbul.

If you would like to stop somewhere along the route for coffee or water, you can.

If you pass a shopping mall and want some time for shopping, the itinerary can be adjusted.

If you see a beautiful Bosphorus viewpoint and want a photograph, the driver can help find a suitable stopping point where stopping is safe and legally permitted.

You are not forced to search for another taxi every time your plans change.

Travel with the Same Driver Throughout the Day

Another advantage is having the same professional driver and vehicle throughout your itinerary.

Instead of explaining each destination to a new taxi driver, your chauffeur already knows the planned route and your next stop.

An English-speaking driver also makes communication much easier for international visitors.

The chauffeur is not a licensed tourist guide unless a separate guiding service has specifically been booked, but an experienced local driver can still help with practical information about neighborhoods, routes, traffic and getting from one location to another efficiently.

In this way, your driver can become a useful local travel companion for the practical side of your day.

Leave Your Bags in the Vehicle Between Stops

When exploring parks and nature areas, you may be carrying:

camera equipment, jackets, shopping bags, children's belongings or other items you do not necessarily want to carry through every location.

With the same private vehicle available throughout the day, suitable belongings can remain in the vehicle while you explore.

For security, we still recommend keeping passports, cash, jewellery and irreplaceable valuables with you.

Spend Your Time Exploring, Not Finding Transportation

This is where chauffeur service becomes particularly useful for Hidden Istanbul itineraries.

Instead of spending part of your holiday asking:

“Where can we find another taxi?”

“How do we get from Mihrabat to Hidiv?”

“Can this taxi wait for us?”

you can concentrate on the question that actually matters:

“Where do we want to go next?”

For couples, families, small groups and photographers, that can make the entire day considerably more comfortable.

Book an Istanbul Chauffeur Service

If you would like to turn the places in this Green Istanbul guide into your own private itinerary, you can book a chauffeur-driven vehicle directly with Transfer3e.

Book Istanbul Chauffeur Service – Private Luxury Car Hire

The current service page offers a private 8-hour chauffeur experience. If you need a longer day for a more extensive itinerary, you can contact Transfer3e before booking to ask about additional hours and a customized route. Transfer3e

Tell us which places you would like to visit, and we can help arrange the stops in a practical order so that you spend less time crossing Istanbul unnecessarily and more time actually enjoying it.

Enis ERBAY's Recommendation

“For places like Mihrabat, Hidiv, Ataturk Arboretum or the northern Bosphorus, I think a chauffeur service makes much more sense than using a different taxi for every journey. You have the same car throughout the day, you can leave suitable belongings inside, stop for coffee or shopping when you need to, and change the pace of the day if you discover somewhere you like. Most importantly, you spend your time exploring Istanbul rather than organizing transportation.”
