Istanbul Airport Layover: How Many Hours Do You Need to See the City? (2026)

To see a little of Istanbul on a layover at Istanbul Airport (IST), allow at least 8 to 9 hours between landing and take-off. Leaving the terminal takes 30–60 minutes, the drive to Sultanahmet 45–90 minutes each way, and you should be back about 3 hours before an international flight. With less time, stay at the airport, or join Turkish Airlines' free Touristanbul tour if your ticket qualifies.

How many hours do you need?

Before any sightseeing, a trip into the city costs about 6 to 7 hours: up to an hour to get out of the airport, two to three hours on the road there and back, and about 3 hours at the airport before your next flight. What is left is your time in the city:

LayoverTime in the cityWhat is realistic
Under 7 hoursNoneStay airside. Touristanbul is the only city trip worth trying, if you qualify.
8–9 hoursAbout 1–2 hoursOne area, such as Sultanahmet, by private car
10–12 hoursAbout 3–5 hoursSultanahmet and a Bosphorus view, or Galata and Taksim
12–24 hoursA full day, or a night in a hotelThe Old City, a Bosphorus ferry and a dinner in the city

These are our estimates for a flight that lands on time. Leave a margin for passport queues, and on weekdays avoid the drive back between about 17:00 and 20:00, when traffic is heaviest.

Can you leave the airport during a layover?

Yes, but leaving the airport means entering Turkey, so you pass passport control and need the right to enter on your passport. Many nationalities can visit Turkey without a visa; others need an e-visa, which you apply for online before you travel at evisa.gov.tr, the official site. Check the rules for your passport with the Turkish Ministry of Foreign Affairs or your airline. If you stay in the international transit area, you do not need a visa at all.

Your checked bags usually travel through to your final destination when both flights are on one ticket; ask at check-in for your first flight. Travel with hand luggage only, and the city is much easier.

Touristanbul: the free layover tour

Turkish Airlines runs Touristanbul, a free guided tour for its transit passengers, with transport, an English-speaking guide, meals and museum entrance included. According to Turkish Airlines' Touristanbul page (checked in October 2026), you qualify when:

  • your layover at Istanbul Airport is between 6 and 24 hours, between two international flights;
  • your ticket was issued by Turkish Airlines, with a ticket number starting with 235;
  • both flights are on the same booking (PNR).

The tours run at set times: a sightseeing tour from 08:00 to 11:30, a half-day tour from 08:30 to 15:00, an evening tour from 16:00 to 21:30 and, from 1 April to 31 October, a Bosphorus tour from 18:30 to 23:00. Register at the Touristanbul desk opposite meeting point 4 in the arrivals hall, at least 30 minutes before the tour starts. A visa, if you need one, is still your own responsibility.

Getting into the city and back

  • Private transfer both ways: the driver meets you in the arrivals hall with a name sign and takes you straight to Sultanahmet or Taksim; a second booking brings you back at a set time. See the Istanbul Airport to Sultanahmet and Istanbul Airport to Taksim pages.
  • A car with a driver for 8 or 12 hours: the driver stays with you, waits at each stop and drives you back to the airport in time. You can book it on our chauffeur service page.
  • Taxi: on the meter, roughly 2,500 TL each way to Sultanahmet in a yellow taxi, more in traffic.
  • Metro and bus: the M11 runs from under the terminal to Gayrettepe in 30 to 45 minutes, and Havaist buses run to Taksim and Sultanahmet. Both are cheap but slow, and on a short layover every change costs time you do not have.

What you can see in a few hours

Sultanahmet suits a short visit best, because the main sights stand within a few minutes' walk of each other: Hagia Sophia, the Blue Mosque, the Hippodrome and the Basilica Cistern. Queues can be long, so on a short layover pick one sight to go inside and see the rest from the square. From the Old City, the Galata Bridge and the waterfront at Eminönü give you a view of the Bosphorus and the Golden Horn.

  • Mosques close to visitors during prayer times, especially at midday on Fridays. Cover your shoulders and knees; women also cover their hair.
  • In the evening the sights close, but the Old City, Galata and İstiklal Avenue stay lively, and the Bosphorus shore is lit up.
  • Money: carry some Turkish lira; most shops and restaurants also take cards.

Getting back in time

Plan to be back at the terminal about 3 hours before an international flight. Istanbul Airport has a security check at the entrance, before check-in, and then passport control and another security check before the gates. Book the return trip with a margin for traffic, especially on weekday evenings.

Frequently asked questions

Is 6 hours enough to leave Istanbul Airport?

Not for sightseeing on your own: getting out, the drive there and back and the 3 hours you need before your next flight take most of it. With 6 to 24 hours and a Turkish Airlines ticket, the free Touristanbul tour is the exception.

Do I need a visa to leave Istanbul Airport on a layover?

You need the right to enter Turkey on your passport: visa-free entry or an e-visa from evisa.gov.tr, depending on your nationality. You need no visa if you stay in the transit area.

How long does it take from Istanbul Airport to Sultanahmet?

45 to 90 minutes by car for the 50 km, depending on traffic. The M11 metro and Havaist buses take longer.

Is Touristanbul really free?

Yes. Turkish Airlines covers transport, the guide, meals and museum entrance, for passengers with a Turkish Airlines ticket and an international layover of 6 to 24 hours at Istanbul Airport.

Can a driver wait for me while I visit the city?

Yes. Book a car with a driver for 8 or 12 hours: the driver waits at each stop and takes you back to the airport. Or book two transfers, one into the city and one back at a set time.
